St. Luke Religious Education Mission Statement

It is our goal that the St. Luke Religious Education Program provides religious formation which is consistent with the teaching and traditions of our Catholic Faith. We provide the opportunities to experience the rich sacramental life of the Church that can nourish and sustain our faith. We actively involve parents in many aspects of religious formation of their children.

Program Description

St. Luke Religious Education Program is offered from September through May in St. Luke School classrooms.

Sessions are offered on:

Wednesday afternoon: Kindergarten through 4th grade, 3:30 - 4:30 pm

Wednesday evening: 5th through 8th grade, 6:30 - 7:30 pm

St. Luke Home Catechesis is offered for families who choose to catechize their children at home in all grades except Grade 2 and Grade 8, which are sacrament preparation years. Contact the Religious Education Office for an appointment to discuss this program.

Sacrament Preparation

St. Luke Sacrament Preparation is offered from September through April.

Sacrament Preparation is a two-year process. Children preparing for Reconciliation and Eucharist must have completed the 1st grade in Religious Education or in a Catholic school. This year lays the foundation for their Catholic Faith. The second year helps them develop further in their understanding of the Catholic Faith.

Confirmation is likewise a two-year process for children being confirmed in the 8th grade. Children who are 7th graders in Religious Education classes or in the parish school complete their service component in their 7th grade year along with their regular religion curriculum. The Confirmation Spiritual Year begins in the 8th grade along with their preparation for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Children’s Catechesis and Initiation into the Church is offered from October through April for families with children older than seven years of age who have been baptized, have not been baptized, or were baptized in a different faith tradition. These children have not completed or participated in a parish religious education program or in a parish school, and are seeking reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist, Confirmation, and in some cases Baptism for their children. Call the Religious Education Office for more information.

Full-time Catechists pay 1/2 tuition!

Our religious education sessions depend entirely upon catechists and volunteers. Parents, along with Catechists, are vital to passing on the faith to the children of St. Luke Parish. It is a very rewarding ministry of the Church. It is mandatory that all catechists, substitutes, and others working with children must complete the Protecting God’s Children Training through the Archdiocese of Chicago.

In order to keep class sizes manageable, we ask that you consider being a catechist, substitute catechist, or helper. Please check the area of the registration form if you would consider being a volunteer in our program. Our catechists lead children through Scripture, Doctrine, Church Tradition and Prayer to build a strong foundation of faith. In appreciation, our full-time Catechists pay only half of the Religious Education tuition!

The Religious Education Advisory Board also needs your expertise! We meet monthly from September to May in the evening. We welcome newcomers to indicate your interest in the space provided on the registration form. Members of the Board assist the Director of Religious Education in fundraising efforts and family gatherings, and advise on procedures and policies for the program.

Program Overview Minimize
  • We provide religious formation that is consistent with the basic traditions and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, which is reflected in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the National Directory for Catechesis, and other Church documents.
  • We provide the opportunities to experience the rich sacramental life of the Church, which nourishes and sustains our faith.
  • We actively involve parents in all aspects of the Religious Education Program.
  • We underscore Pope Francis' encouragement to all of us to live out the "Joy of the Gospel" through the faith life of our parish and the importance of regular attendance at Sunday Mass.
Loyola Press – A Jesuit Ministry provides various curricula for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade, which includes instruction for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation.

A Home School option for religious formation is also available for most grade levels except the First Eucharist and Confirmation year.

Various publishers also provide materials for instructional needs for school-age children needing baptism and/or formation in the Catholic Faith.

Attendance:  The religious formation program encourages eight years of religious education for children. Parents are responsible for getting their children to sessions from September-April. Special circumstances are unavoidable when children are sick or have other conflicts that cannot be avoided.

If your child is unable to attend class, please contact the Religious Education office before class begins.
               PLEASE CALL  708-771-5959
               or send an EMAIL to

Safety is our first priority for your children. The religious education office will follow up by calling all parents whose children miss class if you don’t notify us in advance. We appreciate your cooperation.
Discipline: We ask your cooperation in maintaining an efficient and consistent form of discipline. Children are responsible for their own behavior. Catechists are encouraged to be in touch with parents. The director will help to resolve problems that occur.
Attire: Students should come to class dressed appropriately.
Class Behavior: All students are expected to address their catechists and other adults by their proper titles, i.e., Mr., Mrs., Ms., Sister, Father, etc. When children are addressed, they should respond in a courteous manner. Children should know the names of their catechists just as catechists should know their students’ names.
Prayer: The children’s textbooks have a listing of prayers that should be learned at each grade level. Parents are the first teachers of their children, and learning prayers at home is very important.

Religious Education Advisory Board:

Members of the Advisory Board assist the Director of Religious Education in fundraising efforts and family gatherings, and they advise on procedures and policies for the program. The advisory board meets monthly on evenings from September - May.

For questions, please contact the Religious Education Office at 771-5959.
